What rekeying actually does
Inside a pin-tumbler lock is a row of small pins cut to different lengths. Your key lifts those pins to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. When a locksmith rekeys a lock, they take the cylinder apart and swap those pins for a new set that matches a new key.
The lock body, handle and deadbolt stay on the door. Only the inside of the cylinder changes, and every old key stops working immediately.
What replacing a lock means
Replacing means taking the whole lock off the door and installing new hardware: a new deadbolt, knob, lever or handle set. You get new keys with it, but you also get a new mechanism, a new finish and, if you choose it, a higher security grade.
When rekeying is the better choice
- You just moved into a home and don't know who has copies of the old keys.
- A roommate, tenant, ex or contractor still has a key.
- Your keys were lost or stolen, but the locks work fine.
- You want every exterior door on one key and the locks share the same brand and keyway.
Rekeying is usually the lower-cost option because you're paying for pins and labor, not new hardware.
When replacing is worth it
- The lock is worn, sticky or hard to turn even with a good key.
- The lock was damaged in a break-in or attempted entry.
- You want a stronger lock, such as an ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt, or a restricted key that can't be copied at a kiosk.
- You're switching to a smart lock or keypad deadbolt.
- You want a new look or finish for the front door.
Can every door use one key?
Usually, yes. If your locks are the same brand, a locksmith can rekey them all to one key. If you have a mix (for example Kwikset on the front door and Schlage on the back), the keyways are different, so one cylinder may need to be swapped before everything can run on a single key.
Don't forget the strike plate
Most forced entries don't defeat the lock itself. They break the door frame around the strike plate. Whether you rekey or replace, ask for a reinforced strike plate with 3-inch screws that reach the wall stud. It's one of the cheapest security upgrades you can make.
