Moving Into a Home in Texas? Rekey on Day One

You don't know how many copies of your new home's keys exist. Previous owners, contractors, agents and neighbors may all have one.

Why move-in day is the right time

Builders, previous owners, cleaners, dog walkers and real estate lockboxes all create copies. Rekeying every exterior lock makes sure the only working keys are the ones in your hand.

If you're renting in Texas

Texas Property Code Section 92.156 generally requires a landlord to rekey or change the security devices within seven days after a tenant turnover, at the landlord's expense. If you moved in and aren't sure it was done, ask your landlord in writing. If you want extra rekeying beyond what the law requires, check your lease and get permission before changing anything.

Move-in lock checklist

  • Rekey the front door, back door, side doors and the door from the garage into the house.
  • Check the garage side door and any gate locks.
  • Reset or reprogram garage door openers and keypad codes.
  • Change smart lock codes and remove old users from the app.
  • Check that every deadbolt fully extends into the frame.
  • Upgrade strike plates with 3-inch screws on exterior doors.
  • Check sliding doors for a working lock and add a bar in the track.

One key for the whole house

If your locks are the same brand, they can usually be rekeyed to a single key while the locksmith is there. It's the easiest time to do it.

FAQ

Quick answers

Should I rekey a brand-new build?

Yes. Construction locks are often keyed so crews can get in, and many subcontractors may have handled keys.

Is rekeying enough, or should I replace?

If the locks are in good shape, rekeying is enough. Replace them if they're worn, damaged or you want a stronger grade.
